Ekaterina vanovskaya
watercoloR painting (section B)
Ekaterina Vanovskaya was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. She received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Indiana University, Bloomington. She has exhibited nationally and received numerous grants and residencies, including a recent one this summer in Hungary.
She says that her childhood experiences in Russia frame the core of her work. Her memories symbolize isolated experiences and therefore have a strong emotional impact. Her bold work contains several repeating themes: loneliness, nostalgia, longing, melancholia and a search for a sense of place. Since she no longer occupies the physical places where she grew up, she sees them now through the lens of her imagination and recreates them in her work.
